The Travels with Kev Newsletter
Hello Reader,
ALL ABOARD for this week’s newsletter! A few things this week: a free reference guide, saving your Amtrak points, and more.
I created an exclusive guide for the newsletter!
Need a printable overview of Amtrak's long-distance train services? You're in luck!
As a newsletter subscriber, you have exclusive access to my new guide, which lists cross-country routes, destinations, food services, and more.
If you don't need this guide right now, no worries! You can always access it later through the link in the footer of these newsletters.
This cheat sheet is continually evolving, and I’m thankful to my Patreon members, who were the first to see it and helped me transform it into what it is now.
Please feel free to reach out if you notice anything missing or have any suggestions!
Did you notice this?
I recently came across an interesting update while planning a trip that I thought would be worth sharing.
In the past, Amtrak's minimum point redemption for rewards travel started at 800 points. However, I noticed that for a short trip—just 13 miles—the redemption requirement has dropped to only 300 points. That must be the new lower limit.
I’m not sure if Amtrak officially announced this change, but it’s excellent news for frequent travelers who want to maximize the value of their points. This adjustment makes it easier to use points for shorter journeys, which is a welcome benefit.
Take Amtrak to Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is just around the corner, and if you’re traveling to New Orleans, why not let Amtrak take care of the driving? Avoid the traffic, skip the exorbitant parking fees, and arrive in town prepared to enjoy the parades.
Want a preview of what’s happening this year? Check out the Beyond Bourbon Street Podcast episode: 2025 Mardi Gras Preview with Arthur Hardy. And if you’re curious about taking the train, Travels with Kev has you covered!
Crescent – Runs from New York City through Atlanta to New Orleans.
Sunset Limited – Rolls from Los Angeles through Texas to New Orleans.
All three trains arrive at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (NOL), just a short distance from the French Quarter and the parade routes.
Why Take Amtrak?
For low–stress travel, Kick back in a comfy seat (or snag a sleeper) and let Amtrak take you there.
Pack More Beads – Amtrak’s baggage policy is way more generous than an airline’s carry-on limits.
Easy Arrival – Step off the train, and you’re practically at the party.
If Mardi Gras is a must-see event for you, consider making Amtrak a part of your journey. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

What has Kev been up to?
I’m balancing family responsibilities with my love for train travel this spring.
My main trip later this spring involves flying to Florida to visit a friend before assisting my parents in returning home.
However, I’m excited to include train travel in the journey. To get to Chicago, I will choose either Amtrak or Metra, and I plan to take the Orange Line in Chicago to Midway Airport.
Having that booked, I’m now planning a few train adventures.
One option is an easy round trip on Metra to Chicago. It's budget-friendly, relaxing, and allows me to enjoy the ride while being productive. I can do this a few times.
Additionally, I am planning a longer train trip through the Midwest, although timing issues have compelled me to reconsider my initial plan. I’m committed to making it work and turning this trip into a reality.
What trips do you have planned? Whether it’s a short getaway or a cross-country adventure, I’d love to hear about your travel stories!
