With the new year underway, it’s the perfect time to dream about travel for the year ahead.
Whether you envision a fall getaway, a holiday travel, or a spur-of-the-moment adventure, now is the time to start planning!
Here's a helpful tip: Amtrak lets you book your trips up to 11 months in advance. This point can come into play if you want accommodations like adjacent roomettes or bedroom suits. And in some cases, save money!
A quote landed in my inbox this week that resonated with me:
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” — Theodore Roosevelt
How often do we stop trying something new because we think others do it better? Or who am I to travel (or whatever you are questioning)?
This thought applies to me in my travels and in creating content for you.
We don’t all need to be Rick Steves or Jeb Brooks to have meaningful adventures, and you don't need to be me to travel by train.
Travel isn’t about living up to someone else’s highlight reel—it’s about discovering what makes the journey meaningful for you.
Ask yourself: - Am I finding joy in the journey? - How can I grow and improve as a traveler?
Maybe we should pack lighter, leave room for spontaneity, or be more efficient at planning.
Let’s focus on making each trip better for ourselves, not by trying to achieve others' standards.
What has Kev been up to?
I had no big trips over the past week, so I’ve been content staying cozy at home during the Midwest’s unpredictable weather!
In true Midwest fashion, I went from enjoying jacket-free walks to having work (church) canceled due to the extreme cold.
Before it got too cold, one highlight was a trip to Madison, WI, with my dad. We visited the Capitol Theatre to see the silent film Yes or No?, accompanied by my friend R. Jelani Eddington on the Grand Barton organ. The music brought the film to life, filling the room with emotion.
Visiting the theatre felt like a homecoming, as I had visited frequently. It had been around ten years since I last went, and it brought back memories of its distinct charm. Also, how wonderful that organ is!
I’ve shared photos and video clips on Patreon if you want to check them out!
