An Amtrak schedule update, and should we head to Alaska?

The Travels with Kev Newsletter

Hello Reader,

ALL ABOARD for this week’s newsletter!

The Borealis Gets A Schedule Update

On Monday, March 3, 2025, the Borealis implemented a revised schedule, adding a 12-minute buffer time in the westbound direction and 7 minutes in the eastbound direction.

While Amtrak has not provided an official reason, I would guess that the update improves the train’s movement in and out of Chicago. The train shares tracks with Metra between Union Station and Rondout. Having traveled through this busy corridor on the Hiawatha, I’ve often experienced delays due to Metra traffic.

This change could also coordinate with CPKC (Canadian Pacific Kansas City) to alleviate congestion or assist all three railroads in maintaining a better operations schedule.

What has Kev been up to?

On Monday, I decided to take a trip to Chicago to enjoy a train ride—because honestly, isn’t that a great reason? I hopped on the Metra District Milwaukee North Central Line from Fox Lake, a route I’ve taken many times before, though it had been a while.

Sometimes, the best trips are the spontaneous ones. Once second-guessing kicks in, you’re either already committed or too far along to turn back. While Metra isn’t the most luxurious railroad, it’s a solid commuter line that scratches that train travel itch. Plus, that railroad offers an affordable way to get some rail time and break out of the house.

I wanted to address the occasional typos in these newsletters. TWK is a one-person show, and I use a few programs to assist with editing. However, they sometimes seem to have a mind of their own—occasionally doing more harm than good. I try to catch any mistakes during my final scan, but sometimes something slips through or doesn’t save correctly. Technology is great—when it works for you! So, I apologize for that. I hope you understand.

On another note, I recently sent postcards to my Patreon members. If you’d like to support TWK, this is a great way to do it!
