Hello Reader,

ALL ABOARD, for this week's newsletter!

Exploring Amtrak Accommodations: Bedrooms

On my first trip aboard the Floridian, I had a bedroom, and boy, did I enjoy it.

As a solo traveler, I usually find that a roomette provides sufficient space; however, I appreciated having the larger room during those three days and two nights.

What is an Amtrak Bedroom?

Bedrooms, sometimes called deluxe bedrooms, offer twice the space of a roomette. The ensuite bathroom/shower takes up some of that space.

Seating and Sleeping Arrangements:

  • There is a sofa that converts into a lower bed, which is a little bigger than a twin-size bed.
  • A chair offers comfortable seating during the day for conversations.
  • The upper bunk descends from above and can be accessed via a ladder when made up. Safety straps extend from the bed to the ceiling to keep you safe.

Convenience Features:

  • A fold-out table and cup holders are between the sofa and the chair.
  • A small closet with hangers is available for storing jackets.
  • Several lighting options include overhead, wall, reading, and nightlights.

Scenic Views:

  • Windows on both sides of the train car provide scenic views, although you’ll need to look past the hallway.
  • Curtains are also available for privacy and to block out light.

Suite Option:

  • You can reserve two adjoining bedroom suites, which have doors that open like those in hotels. You need to call Amtrak to confirm availability.

The Superliner sleeping cars have five bedrooms, but a deluxe sleeper car on the Auto Train has ten.

Each Viewliner sleeping car contains two bedrooms.

Packing Tips

Viewliners offer overhead storage above the door and bathroom. While there is extra space, larger bags may not fit. If you cannot reach this area, you may need to ask for assistance.

Superliner bedrooms offer additional space, but generally, the more luggage you bring, the less floor space you'll have. You can store larger bags in the luggage area on the lower level, just before the stairs.

What Kev Has Been Up To!

Winter has arrived in Wisconsin, and I am not pleased about it—not that there is much I can do. I was in Florida during the "gradual temperature drop," so I missed that transition.

The new computer I got has been working well. It is similar to my old computer, but two issues throw me off. Firstly, the power button does not light up, so if it doesn’t turn on right away, I’m unsure whether I’ve pressed it.

Secondly, the headphone jack and the power port have switched sides from their previous locations. I find myself trying to plug things into where they used to be. None of these issues are huge deals, but it does take some getting used to.

I am planning a winter regional train trip, but unsure where to go. My top choice is Michigan, as I haven’t been there in a few years. If I decide on Michigan, I might visit Battle Creek or Kalamazoo. Another option I’m considering is the St. Paul or St. Louis.

This week, I mailed out postcards, which I find fun. If you want to receive one, please refer to the following section for more information.
